5 a side

A well-established competition, which has been an important part of the season's programme of football, is the Indoor 5 a Side. The first competition was played in season 1978-79, with Birtley East crowned as the first winners of the trophy

Played in January/February, the competition offers schools a chance to get back into football following the winter break. For most of the time, the competition was played at Park View Sports Hall but, latterly, has been held at Birtley Leisure Centre

As an added incentive, the winning school represent Chester-le-Street Association in the Durham County semi finals and, hopefully, the county final. Teams from our association have often achieved success in the county finals as seen below
